Why Dealerships Push Warranties at Closing
When you buy an RV, the finance and insurance (F&I) office is where extended warranties get sold — often with significant markup. Dealerships act as middlemen: they buy coverage from an administrator at wholesale rates and resell it at retail, sometimes adding thousands of dollars to the contract price.
The pitch is convenience: roll the warranty into your loan, sign once, and drive away covered. But that convenience comes at a cost, and many buyers don't realize they can purchase identical or better coverage directly from warranty companies after leaving the lot.
Buying Direct: What Changes
Direct providers like America's RV Warranty, Good Sam ESP, and Wholesale Warranties sell plans without dealer markup. Our secret shoppers consistently found that quotes for the same coverage level run 15–40% lower when purchased directly rather than through a dealership.
You also get more time to compare. At a dealer, you're under pressure to close before you leave. Direct providers let you request sample contracts, compare deductibles, and call back with questions — without a salesperson steering you toward the plan that pays them the highest commission.
When the Dealership Option Makes Sense
There are legitimate reasons to buy at the dealer. Some manufacturers bundle promotional coverage only available at purchase. If the dealer matches a direct quote and you want everything in one loan, that can be reasonable — but ask for the administrator name, request the sample contract, and compare against at least two direct quotes before signing.
Never assume the dealer price is fixed. Our shoppers have had success asking F&I managers to match direct quotes, especially near month-end when sales teams are hitting targets.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is dealership RV warranty coverage different from direct coverage?
Often the underlying administrator is the same — you're paying a markup for the dealer's role as salesperson. Always ask who administers the policy and request the contract before comparing.
Can I buy an extended warranty after leaving the dealership?
Yes. Most providers allow enrollment after purchase, though waiting too long may limit eligibility or increase premiums based on age and mileage.
